In the spirit of my novel, The White Lehua, here’s a round up of some of my faves from Hawaii. Bring the islands home every day!
Kat Reeder is an amazing artist and illustrator working out of Oahu. Inexpensive prints of her colorful and captivating island girls can be purchased from her website. American handbag maker, LeSportsac, turned to Reeder for prints honoring Hawaii. The bags are amazing works of art!
Want to wear a Hawaiian shirt without looking like you ought to have “tourist” stamped on your forehead? Greenroom Hawaii has the coolest tees, accessories and art and they’ll ship to the mainland.
The Hobbit House
We stayed in this house when we visited Na’Alehu, Hawaii and it serves as the inspiration for Hale Moana in my book. The house was custom-built by Bill Whaling to look like something right out of Tolkien. The house is completely off-the-grid and is powered by solar generators. And Bill grows his own Mac nuts!
You’ll get enthusiastic thank you calls from anyone you send a Maui Floral bouquet. They design eye-popping arrangements of Hawaiian-grown proteas, orchids, anthuriums and more. You need to allow and extra day or so for delivery from the islands but it will be worth the wait. And most of the arrangements I’ve ordered have stayed fresh for at least ten days after delivery!
If you want to get tan, and I mean that beautiful golden tan, this lotion from Maui is for you. I apply it right over my sunscreen. And it’s getting super popular. In my area, several grocery stores, including Safeway, stock it.
Honorable Mention: L’ANZA Healing Haircare
L’ANZA Haircare is actually from Santa Monica, but its formulating chemist is from Hawaii. L’ANZA gets an honorable mention here because its formulations are packed with Polynesian botanicals like Kukui Nut oil and Noni Noni fruit. The product Trauma Treatment smells like a visit to the islands!
