Updated Fall Writing Contest List

The Write Inclusively Contest
Event Date(s): Submission window opens on 9/4 at 9 a.m. EST and closes 9/6 at 9 p.m.
Having served as a co-host for a number of successful contests, including Query Kombat, SC Author has put together a brand new event to help writers of stories with strong elements of diversity find agents on the hunt for diverse books. While this contest is open to all genres, it is seeking manuscripts that involve systems of oppression like racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. Writers submit their query, first 250 words, a brief statement on their submission’s key issue and a note about the writer’s identity. A full description of the contest can be found here. So far, it has ten participating agents and a host with a track record for connecting writers and agents.

Miss Snark’s First Victim: On the Block
Event Date(s): Submission Window open on 9/10 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST
Authoress Anonymous, host of the popular Baker’s Dozen contest, is back with a new event called “On the Block.” This should be fun for both the participating agents and writers. Authoress and her team will select 24 entries from the contest slush and agents will be given 10 minutes to “bid” on an entry a la auction-house style. Writers can then send their full MS to the agent with the highest bid. Writers submit their first 250 words and their logline. If you want help perfecting your logline, the Miss Snark blog has resources galore. The contest does have a $20 fee, but boasts a VERY impressive lineup of agents.

#PitMad Twitter Pitch Party
Event Date(s): 9/10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST
If you are a querying writer, don’t miss this online pitch party hosted by Brenda Drake. To participate, simply tweet your pitch during the party hours using the #PitMad hash tag. Agents favorite tweets to indicate they’d like to see more. This is a great way for writers to get out of the dreaded agent slush pile. Want help crafting your pitch? See tips from literary agent Carly Watters here.

September Picture Book Party
Event Date(s): Submission window opens 9/14 @ 4 p.m. EST; Agent Round 9/23-9/25
Lately, I’ve really been missing my daughter’s picture book days and missing the special moments created through sharing those books. And it sometimes seems like PB authors don’t get a lot of contest love. That’s why the second installment of Michelle Hauck’s PB Contest is so fantastic. As of the time of this post, the contest has 4 participating PG agents and 2 editors lined up. Michelle and co-host, Sharon Chriscoe, will accept PB and Chapter Books when the submission window opens on 9/14!

Pitch Slam
Event Date(s): Submission window typically opens in October
Pitch Slam is a multi-round, bi-annual contest hosted by L.L. McKinney. It provides an opportunity for writers to receive feedback on their 35-word pitch and their first page. Winning entries advance to the final round where they can receive requests from participating agents. Known for its fun, interactive themes (Marvel Universe, Tinseltown) and opportunities to polish pitches, Pitch Slam is the perfect addition to your fall calendar. Watch L.L.’s blog and Twitter feed for contest dates.

Nightmare on Query Street
Event Date(s): Submission window typically opens in late October
Celebrate Halloween writer style with this contest from Michelle Hauck! In past years, this event has helped unagented writers get their queries and first pages seen by a fantastic array of acquiring agents. Last year’s contest had a mentor round where entrants were paired with agented writers, and received help polishing their queries, before the agent round. Consider subscribing to Michelle’s blog to receive first notice of contest dates and follow her on Twitter for developments.

  • Oh my goodness, this is amazing!! I love contests, but I tend to hear about them too late to participate. Is this something you do regularly?
